Focal Loci of Algebraic Varieties I

چکیده

The focal locus X of an aane variety X is roughly speaking the (projective) closure of the set of points O for which there is a smooth point x 2 X and a circle with centre O passing through x which os-culates X in x. Algebraic geometry interprets the focal locus as the branching locus of the endpoint map between the Euclidean normal bundle N X and the projective ambient space (sends the normal vector O ?x to its endpoint O), and in this paper we address two general problems : 1) Characterize the "degenerate" case where the focal locus is not a hypersurface 2) Calculate, in the case where X is a hypersurface, its degree (with multiplicity)

Study of Genetic Diversity among Philodendron Varieties by Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA Markers

In the present study, Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to analyze the genetic diversity in 20 varieties of Philodendron. The polymerase chain reaction was performed with 60 RAPD primers, out of which 21 primers showed clear amplification as well as more polymorphism. In total, 354 scorable RAPD loci with 348 polymorphic bands (98%) were observed. Percentages of polymo...

Naive Introduction to Algebraic Geometry: the Geometry of Rings

I. BASIC TOOL: RATIONAL PARAMETRIZATION Algebraic geometry is a generalization of analytic geometry the familiar study of lines, planes, circles, parabolas, ellipses, hyperbolas, and their 3 dimensional versions: spheres, cones, hyperboloids, ellipsoids, and hyperbolic surfaces. The essential common property these all have is that they are defined by polynomials. This is the defining characteri...

Random Matrix Theory and Classical Statistical Mechanics . I . Vertex Models

A connection between integrability properties and general statistical properties of the spectra of symmetric transfer matrices of the asymmetric eight-vertex model is studied using random matrix theory (eigenvalue spacing distribution and spectral rigidity). For Yang-Baxter integrable cases, including free-fermion solutions, we have found a Poissonian behavior, whereas level repulsion close to ...

Around the tangent cone theorem

A cornerstone of the theory of cohomology jump loci is the Tangent Cone theorem, which relates the behavior around the origin of the characteristic and resonance varieties of a space. We revisit this theorem, in both the algebraic setting provided by cdga models, and in the topological setting provided by fundamental groups and cohomology rings. The general theory is illustrated with several cl...

Group Actions on Quiver Varieties and Applications

We study algebraic actions of finite groups of quiver automorphisms on moduli spaces of quiver representations. We decompose the fixed loci using group cohomology and we give a modular interpretation of each component. As an application, we construct branes in hyperkähler quiver varieties, as fixed loci of such actions.
